Region 2 Senior Belt Class
East Grinstead, 6 June 2004

Master Goward (5th Duan) held his June Senior Belt Class on Sunday 6th June 2004.

Students from Surrey, Sussex and Kent attended the class and were pleased to work further on technique analysis, in particular, breaking down moves into half steps.

Master Goward also took the students through several combinations of techniques.

This was followed by a session spent focusing on the forms, especially fast count forms in order to further develop correct speed and timing.

Students performed concurrent blocking and striking techniques such as the high open hand block in combination with the outside to inside knife hand strike which Master Goward is demonstrating below.

Correcting a junior student. The hips must twist forward in order to correctly apply the strike with the concurrent block ...
... and the bridge of the hand must be held tight with the fingers straight and the thumb to the side, so the hand is not 'cupped' on impact

Master Goward demonstrates chean chuai ti (front thrust kick) ...

... and students follow to test their balance. Note that the supporting leg must bend

The second half of the two hour class was spent preparing for the upcoming Championships on 19th June. A practice ring was constructed and students took turns practicing and analysing their sparring technique.

Nuria (Croydon) (green belt) and Coral (Tunbridge Wells) (orange belt green tag) practice bout refereed by Mr Nick Evagorou (2nd Duan) Croydon Instructor. Coral does not score here as her kick is blocked by Nuria ...

... but this clear example of a farn sou kong chi (back fist) from Coral scores a point from the judges

Red belt Chris Edmunds scores with this chuan ti (roundhouse kick) to the solar plexus area whilst simultaneously blocking a backfist from his Duan grade opponent

Red Belts, Wayne Parsons and Trevor Badouille watch the practice bouts intently. They are responsible for keeping score, timing the bout and signalling the end of the bout with the electronic buzzer

Master Goward observes and provides constructive comment to the participants. Nick Evagorou referees and Bruce Mitchell acts as one of the corner judges

Region 2 Senior belt classes are open to orange belts upwards. For further information contact Master Goward or your local instructor.
