Masters
and students discuss the practice bout
On
a hot summer's day approximately fifty duan grades and red belts gathered
at National Headquarters for Referee and Judges training in preparation
for this year's National Championships.
It
was good to see several Masters in attendance and also many new faces.
We were pleased to welcome eleven students from Reading with their instructor
Master Nazim Gokcezade.

Bob
Hooper and Master Goward advise young red belt
students on timing the bouts

Clark referees practice bout
The
training session was an ideal opportunity for those new to the task
of refereeing and/or judging to practice their skills, ask questions
and debate.

Grandmaster
Loke and Senior Masters presided over practice bouts and gave direction
and feedback regarding several areas for discussion. For example: to
remind students not to wear glasses when sparring (only sports glasses
or contact lenses), the scoring system and when two points or one point
is applicable, when to deduct points and the process for doing this,
when one judge's score may cancel out another, techniques that are not
permitted (e.g. spinning back fists, open hand techniques, kicks below
the belt) and general etiquette and control of the sparring ring.
