Referee and Judges Training
13th May 2007

1st Ji (red belt) mens practice bout:
Andrew Mangion (Hornchurch) v Russell Jones (Haywards Heath),
Referee William Parsons (Rainham)

This year we will not be holding the National Championships which usually take place in June. We will however be holding Team Championships on Saturday 13th October 2007.

Teams from different clubs will have the opportunity throughout the day to participate in tooi-ta (free sparring) bouts with each other for the team trophies which will be awarded at the end of the day.

Therefore, to keep everyone's skills up to date, a three hour Referee and Judges training session was held at National Headquarters on Sunday 13th May 2007. Another session will be held later this year, most probably in September (date to be announced).

The referee and judges training course, presided over by Grandmaster Loke and Senior Masters, was well attended by students from throughout the United Kingdom, many of whom had driven through torrential rain to get to National Headquarters in Grays, Essex.

Newly graded 2nd duan's had the opportunity to practice refereeing for the first time and more experienced duan grades also had the opportunity of refreshing and updating their refereeing skills.

New duan grades also participated in judging as did their more experienced counterparts. Young 1st ji (red belts) were able to participate in the free sparring and also practice performing the roles of timekeeper and scorekeeper.

The course involved practice bouts of tooi-ta (free sparring), giving those attending the opportunity to ask questions and providing a forum for open discussion and debate.
