The
first of the two referee and judges training sessions took place at
National Headquarters, Grays, Essex on
Sunday 30th April.

Red
belts (1st ji) sparring (tooi ta)
1st
ji red belt students practiced their sparring to give new and seasoned
duan grades the opportunity to practice their
judging skills.

1st
ji's were also able to perform timing and scoring
record keeping duties at the control table
Grandmaster
Loke and senior Masters directed events,
checking the scoring accuracy of referees and hand signals of those
performing judging duties.

Grandmaster
Loke took time to explain rules for scoring,
etiquette and general procedures and protocol.

The
three hour training session was well attended
by many duan grades and 1st Ji's.

New
duan grades had the opportunity of practicing judging for the first
time, whilst more senior members were able to refresh their refereeing
skills.

Referee Chris Wright (3rd Duan, Grays)
Referees
had several opportunities during the afternoon
to practice their skills ready for the championships.
Senior
members also participated in sparring practice.

Tony Salton (3rd Duan, Grays) v Barry Smith (2nd Duan, Hornchurch)
New
duan grades from different clubs also had the
opportuinty to practice their sparring and learn the scoring system,
e.g. two points for evasion and counter, block and counter or a jumping
kick.
Those
present were also reminded of prohibited techniques which inlcude open
hand techniqes, knees, elbows, spinning back fists, grabbing, sweeping
etc.

Judges
were called uppon to enter the ring and complete scoring tests by counting
the scores from the four ring judges
and their own score.
Master
Blakemore, Master Butterworth, Grandmaster Loke and Master Goward
Senior
Masters answered quesions from students
throughout the afternoon including the distance from
target to score for different level belts.
