At the end of June 2006 Master Goward (6th Duan, Regional Director for
Surrey, Sussex and Kent) was asked by the Girl Guides Association to
coach self defence sessions at their bi-annual event near East Grinstead.
The
name of this year's event was called "Groovy Chicks in 2006" and it
involved 1,200 guides aged 10 years upwards from London and South East
region [LaSER].
This
was the fifth time Master Goward had taught the Guides. Six sessions
were conducted over a weekend with approximately twenty girls per session.

target bats utilised for training practice
During
a one and a half hour class the girls were taught how to use evasion
techniques in order to keep a safe distance between themselves and their
would-be attacker. Then they were taught how to counter attack; this
was done firstly by using target pads and kick shields to practice accuracy
and power of their hand strikes and kicking. Then after a word of caution
from Master Goward regarding safety of the opponent, it was time to
practice the evasion and counter moves together, this time with partners.

The
final part of the lesson was what the girls should do if they were grabbed
or restrained in any way, and they were given practical advice on how
to be safety aware.
