Foreword from Grandmaster Loke

I am very proud to report that our 2009 National Championships was a resounding success; a truly Martial Art family gathering in high spirits, great sportsmanship and an outstanding display of technical improvement.

Referees, judges and officials are to be highly commended for their tireless work all day to ensure safety, fairness and the smooth running of our prestigious annual event. Wu Kwans from near and far demonstrated their dedication and sincerity to contribute towards a long but enjoyable day. It has also given us a much needed boost to a very difficult year of national and global economic uncertainty.

The 2009 Winner (and 22nd recipient) of the Bill Edwards Memorial Award for the Most Outstanding Under Sixteen student is Alexander McIntyre, age 12.He regularly attends Master Cook's class at Chelmsford having graduated from the juniors where he began in August 2002, age 5, training under Mr Jonathan Clark, 2nd Duan. Progressing from being a very quiet and unassuming lad, he has advanced to be an extremely confident and capable 1st Duan, often assisting with the juniors. This transformation in character has astounded and delighted everyone. Our late Bill Edwards would indeed be very proud of Alex. Well Done! (Please see the Bill Edwards Memorial Award Roll of Honour).

On the day I took great pleasure in presenting 'Lui' 6th Duan promotion to three of my senior students - Shi Fu Clive Butterworth, Shi Fu Susan Merreil and Shi Fu Christopher Cook. They are the very main pillars of our Ren Yi Wu Kwan and have taught several of today's instructors who are now running their own Wu Kwans. Two notable Shi Fu Masters 'Ser' 4th Duan promotion was also presented to Master Steve Merrell and Master Kevin Austin - a student of Shi Fu Susan Merrell in the eighties. Master Steve Merrell has contributed many years of patience and literary skill in editing our much admired website. Master Austin established, in his birthplace, our Northern Ireland Whitehead Wu Kwan twelve years ago. His students emulate his dedication, sincerity and good humour. Master Ronketti and I had the opportunity of returning his kind hospitality from earlier in May; eleven stayed in my house which resulted in more than one trip to the local supermarket!

Promotion to Shi Fu since our last Championships includes Masters Robert Hooper and David Hopkins (both first enrolled in 1974 ), David Patston, Jason Woodhams, Stephanie Debenham, Tina Matania, Steve Earle, Tony Clarke, Steven Treadaway, Tina Underwood, Tony Sellen, Christopher Wright, Adrian Belcher and Nick Evagorou. Their loyalty, endurance, continued training and teaching serves as excellent role models in inspiring today's younger generation. Our WU DAO Martial Art Way moves steadily forward.

My family and I wish you All a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year 2010.
