Foreword from Grandmaster Loke

Our 16th National Championships has yet again proved to be a very successful event. Each year the Championships has given our martial arts family an enjoyable and exciting day, with hard fought competition bringing out the best in all of us in terms of good sportsmanship and technical excellence. Many spectators commented on the high standard of all those who participated and I am cheered by the enthusiasm and support given by all the members who attended.

Congratulations to the Referees, Judges and Officials who prepared their duties admirably with fairness, care and sincerity. A special order of thanks goes to Master Adam Goward and his students for hosting and arranging the venue. Good luck and well wishes go to Mr. Nick Evagorou (instructor for Croydon, London) when he represents his country in the Beijing Olympics in August. His achievement is a testament to his strong commitment and dedication, under the able tutelage of Master Adam Goward for more than a decade. You can read his article on our website and also at www.combatmag.co.uk. Our Ren Yi Wu Kwan is indeed proud to have technically contributed the only fighting (sanshou) competitor selected from Great Britain by the Wu Shu International body.

The Bill Edwards Memorial Trophy is in its twentieth year and went to Danny Green from Horsham for outstanding effort, spirit and behaviour. A special welcome to the St Neots wu kwan led by Mr Steven Treadaway, who were taking part for the first time; all competed commendably. Another special welcome to the Whitehead (Northern Ireland) wu kwan led by Mr Kevin Austin. Congratulations go to Patrick, Finola and Siobhan who graded 1st Duans on the Sunday after the Championships!

Further thanks must also go to Dr Tariq Qureshi from Oxford University First Aid Unit for being the paramedic on duty throughout the day. A good job was done once again by the Championship Controller, Robert Hooper who has been one of my earliest students since 1974. Appreciation and thanks to Ms Tina Matania and Mr Steve Merrell for their continuous professional and quality work done for the website. Don't forget to regularly send in more photos, comments and articles.

Our thoughts and well wishes also go with those who were noticeably absent this year. Amongst those are Mr William Parsons who has moved to Brisbane, Australia with his family and has opened a new wu kwan there. Also, good luck to our Mexico wu kwan and their instructor Mr Alejandro Zavala. Our thoughts are with you both and hopefully we can all meet again in the near future. Congratulations to Master Angie Thomas on the birth of her daughter and to Anna Vyas on the birth of her third daughter; more offspring for our martial art family in the not-so-distant future!

I wish you all good health and commend you for your continued support and hard work.
