STRETCHING DURING THE WARM-UP EXERCISES When we start the lesson, we always have to warm up first. The warming up exercises and stretching exercises are very important to improve your fitness and flexibility. After we have done our warm up exercises we are ready to begin the lesson with warm muscles so that we do not overstretch them.
When you stretch forward and from side to side during the floor exercises, it is important that you keep your toes pointing towards the ceiling. Also, do not let your knees roll forward - these too must point towards the ceiling. Breathe in, and when you breathe out do your stretch - try to relax as you stretch. When stretching to the side in box splits (shown in the picture above) remember to reach for your foot with the opposite hand, so if you are reaching towards your left foot, use your right hand. If you cannot reach your foot, grab the leg of your training uniform and use this to try to pull yourself further down to your leg to get a better stretch. Remember, having good flexibility is not something that happens immediately ..... it takes time, patience and lots of practice and a good stretch has to be maintained regularly (even high Duan grades have to keep up their stretching all the time!)
